Dress is the form in which the body is made visible. Bodies are potentially disruptive, and while fashion should not be rejected in the manner either of a stereotypical ‘feminist’, Christian or Islamic moralist, it does act as a form of social control. Conventions of dress, furthermore, attempt to transform flesh into something recognizable and meaningful to a culture; a body that does not conform, that transgresses such cultural codes, is likely to cause offence and outrage and to be met with scorn or incredulity.
